Whiplash

Whiplash is the layman term used to describe either a neck strain or a neck sprain. It occurs when the neck is suddenly and violently "whipped" forward and backward or from side to side (also known as an acceleration-deceleration injury) injuring the soft tissues of the neck, upper shoulders and arms. Whiplash is the most common complaint in motor vehicle accidents (most commonly rear-enders) but can occur in sports and work injuries.

Risk Factors

  • motor vehicle accidents (MVA)
  • contact sports such as football, rugby, etc.
  • slip-and-fall accidents

    Symptoms

  • neck pain/stiffness
  • headache
  • dizziness / Vertigo
  • difficulty swallowing
  • blurred vision
  • ringing in the ears
  • fatigue
  • nausea
  • jaw or face pain
  • Treatments

  • rest
  • ice (used within the first 24 to 72 hours)
  • heat therapy after 72 hours
  • non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • conservative sports chiropractic care
  • soft tissue therapy / massage
  • physical therapy
  • acupuncture
  • surgery
  • Prevention

  • make sure the seat headrest is properly set
  • when playing contact sports, be sure to wear proper fitting safety gear
  • strengthen the neck muscles
