Runner's Toe / Skier's Toe, Tennis Toe

A hemorrhage under the toenail that may be caused by jamming of the toe in the toebox of the shoe or by blunt force trauma to the toe. In sports it is most commonly due to sudden stop and go movement.

Risk Factors
  • long toe nails
  • tight shoes with little toe space

  • Symptoms
  • pain under the toe nail
  • toenail may become reddish, brownish or blueish black

  • Treatments
  • rest
  • change shoes
  • trim toenails
  • if pain persists, a physician can drain the blood by drilling a hole in the toenail
  • non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)

  • Prevention
  • wear proper fitting shoes with enough toebox space
  • keep toenails trimmed
