Lateral Epicondylitis (Tennis Elbow)

Degeneration of the extensor carpi radialis brevis tendon attachment site, weakening the area and leading to pain on the outside (lateral) part of the elbow.

Risk Factors

  • most common between ages 30 to 50, however any age group can acquire it, no predilection for gender
  • repetitive arm movements, especially with eccentric contractions (lengthening of the muscle)
  • use of heavy hand held tools
  • certain non-specific traumatic injuries
  • common with racquet sports
  • Symptoms

  • severe burning pain on outside of elbow, especially during extension of the wrist
  • direct pressure on area increases pain
  • pain with forceful gripping, grasping or when lifting items
  • decreased pain symptoms over night
  • Treatments

  • rest
  • ice (used within the first 24 to 72 hours)
  • compression
  • modify activity
  • conservative sports chiropractic
  • soft tissue therapies / massage
  • non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • physical therapy
  • acupuncture
  • cortisone injections
  • surgery
  • Prevention

  • stretch and warm-up prior to activity
  • perform regular exercises to improve strength and flexibility of the elbow
  • learn the proper technique for your sport
