Shoulder Impingement Syndrome (aka Rotator Cuff Impingement)

Repeated overhead movements of the arm can cause the rotator cuff to come into contact with the outer edge of the shoulder blade near the attachment of the collarbone (known as the Acromion. This can lead to inflammation and swelling of the rotator cuff causing a secondary condition called tendonitis. The swollen rotator cuff can become pinched or impinged under the acromion.

Risk Factors

  • repeated overhead arm movements
  • repeated overhead lifting
  • suffering from rheumatoid arthritis
  • Symptoms

  • shoulder to elbow pain
  • pain at night, especially when laying on injured side
  • arm weakness
  • decreased range of motion of the shoulder
  • normally suffer from secondary conditions of tendinitis and bursitis
  • Treatments

  • rest
  • ice (used within the first 24 to 72 hours)
  • modify activity/work
  • non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • conservative sports chiropractic
  • soft tissue therapies / massage
  • physical therapy
  • cortizone injections
  • surgery
  • Prevention

  • avoid repetitive overhead activities
  • perform regular exercises to improve strength and flexibility of the rotator cuff
