Chondromalacia Patella (Patellofemoral Pain)

Normally defined as softening and degeneration of the soft tissue underneath the kneecap leading to pain associated with bending and straightening of the knee.

Risk Factors
  • more common in young adults
  • affects more women then men
  • common in runner's or anyone involved in a sport that stresses the knees by overuse or overloading
  • history of knee dislocation or fracture

  • Symptoms
  • knee tenderness
  • front knee pain that worsens after prolonged sitting
  • pain or discomfort that worsens with stairs or arising out of a seated posture
  • sense of grinding in the knee whenever it is bent and straightened

  • Treatments
  • rest
  • ice
  • non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • physical therapy
  • increasing strength of quadriceps, adductors and iliotibial (IT) band while stretching hamstrings
  • soft tissue therapies / massage
  • cortisone injections
  • surgery

  • Prevention
  • stretch and warm-up prior to activity
  • perform regular exercises to improve strength and flexibility of the quadriceps, hamstring, adductor and IT band
  • avoid activities that are stressfull to the knee
  • increase activity level gradually
  • lose weight
  • wear proper shoes for the activity
  • wear knee supports/band when appropriate
