Back Sprain / Strain

Most commonly due to overloading or overusing the back muscles, but can occur due to traumatic injuries such as motor vehicle accidents, sports injuries and or work injuries. Back strains affect the muscle (aka pulled muscle)or tendon, while back sprains involve the ligaments.

Risk Factors
  • very heavy lifting
  • poor posture / lifting technique
  • falls
  • unexpected back twisting / torquing
  • sustained bad posture
  • constant repetitive movements

  • Symptoms
  • pain
  • weaness
  • spasms
  • swelling
  • bruising
  • loss of active range of movement

  • Treatments
  • normally resolve within 2 weeks to 2 months
  • rest
  • ice* (used within the first 24 to 72 hours)
  • heat* (used in the subacute to chronic stages or before exercise)
  • wear a back support, especially while working or during activity
  • non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • physical therapy
  • conservative sports chiropractic
  • soft tissue therapies / massage
  • acupuncture
  • cortizone injections
  • surgery

  • Prevention
  • perform regular core exercises to improve strength and flexibility

  • *Do not apply heat or cold if you have circulation problems or nerve damage unless recommended by your physician.
